And We Begin....

May. 31st, 2008 | 01:34 pm

It has been awhile since I last posted and I apologize for that fact. A lot has happened since then and I want to update everyone on what has been going on the last month.
Over Mother's Day weekend I had the privilege of officiating The Wally tournament at Old Hickory CC in Hermitage (just east of Nashville). This tournament is a preseason opener to the summer junior golf season and pits the best juniors in Tennessee against each other. The overall boys and girls champions can call themselves one of the best in the state. This year Joe David came out on top in the Boys Division and Kendall Martindale beat Lauren Stratton in a playoff in the Girls Division. Results can be seen on www.golfhousetennessee.com under the "Junior Golf Activities" section.
The week following The Wally was all about getting ready for Junior Tour staff training. Many supplies need to organized to make sure each region of the state has the proper equipment and much of the week was spent completing that task. The staff came in on Thursday night and spent the weekend at Golf House and went through our staff training for the Junior Tour tournaments. We had a bunch of new faces in the room so I am a little nervous about how the first couple of weeks will go, but I am sure everyone will get the hang of it.
After training I quickly switched gears and headed out Sunday afternoon (May 18th) to this year's State Open at Gaylord Springs in Nashville. We spent Sunday afternoon and all Monday preparing the course and making sure all the paperwork was done for the Championship. On Tuesday and Wednesday we had a full field of 156 players and after Wednesday's round we cut the field to the top 60 players and ties (it makes Thursdays final round go by much more quickly). After the champion (Cody Hale) was crowned on Thursday afternoon, we loaded up the cars and headed home.
After the long week I was ready for rest and relaxation and it came in a trip down to The Honors Course in Chattanooga. The past couple of years over Memorial Day weekend, The Honors Course hosts the Lupton Invitational in which they invite many of the best amateur golfers across the country to compete in a 54-hole Stableford format golf tournament. I was very fortunate to be invited to officiate the event along with my supervisor Matt Vanderpool. When we arrived on Thursday night we were treated like royalty all weekend. One of the highlights was watching Tim Jackson be inducted into The Honors Circle. Jack Lupton (owner of The Honors Course) has a group of influential Tennessee golfers that he calls The Honors Circle. These individuals have achieved many of the highest accomplishments in golf and Mr. Lupton has created this circle to honor them. With Tim being a TGA Director and Junior Tour parent, I have become acquaintances with him over the past couple of years and it was an honor to witness his induction into a very exclusive circle of golfers. It was time I will never forget. After the tournament was complete on Sunday afternoon Matt and I headed home and I spent Memorial Day with friends and got some rest as the junior tour season was set to begin in the coming days.
Well the season was finally upon us and the rest of Memorial week was spent making sure the first few events went off without a hitch. Unfortunately we had a couple glitches, but all in all the first week was a success. We completed our first TMACS event and had a player (Taylor Manning) shoot a 66 in the final round of the event to win her division decisively. It looks like we are off to a good start and I will be sure to let everyone know how each week goes. Be sure to constantly check back and see what is going on behind the scenes of the TGA Junior Tour.

Until Next Time,

Steve McDonald

Member packets and Tri-Cites PGA Junior Series

May. 2nd, 2008 | 12:44 pm

Well, the month of May has hit and the countdown begins to the first event in just 26 days. Wow, that will be here in no time. Membership numbers continue to increase and as today comes to a close we are right at the 900 mark which puts us on pace for our goals. I know I have said it before, but if this trend continues this year's Tour will be the best on record. Keep those application coming.

Every member will be receiving an e-mail this afternoon concerning their member packets and I will give a brief run down of the situation. We have been putting the packets on hold in hopes of coming up with a more inexpensive way to get the packets out, but after a long debate (with myself) we are going to start mailing out the packets starting mid next week. We will start with the outer regions of the state and work our way in with the hopes of getting everyone their packet by the time the season begins. If you are located around Golf House in Franklin and want to pick up your packet, feel free to stop by and do so. We are usually in the office Monday-Friday from 8am to 5pm.

The Tri-Cities Chapter of the Tennessee Section PGA has announced this afternoon that will be conducting a 5 event Junior Series in June and July. The events will be hosted on the TGA Junior Tour BlueGolf server so the online capabilities will be very similar. These events are open to Boys and Girls ages 8-18 who are residents in the Tri-Cites area or a member at Tri-Cities Chapter member club. For more information on the series please visit www.golfhousetennessee.com and click on the Tri-Cities button on the left hand side of the homepage.

Tour Talk

With Tiger on the sidelines it will open up this week PGA Tour for someone to make a statement. I expect many of the top players in the world to be on leaderboard at weekend's end. So far after a couple of rounds it looks like Anthony Kim is staying hot after his performance in Hilton Head and leads at 7 under par. Nashville's Brandt Snedeker is currently 2 over par and in jeopardy of missing the cut. Hopefully he can give us a couple of birdies coming in.

The event is being played at Quail Hollow GC in Charlotte, NC and it brings back alot of memories. I attended Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC (about an hour from Charlotte) and some friends and I would attend the event on a yearly basis. I remember back in 2003 watching Tiger on the range and being amazed at how he could work the ball in any direction that he liked. Many of the spectators would call out a shot (low fade) and Tiger would pull it off without a hitch.

Until Next Time,

Steve

May is Just Around the Corner

Apr. 25th, 2008 | 06:35 pm

The season is right around the corner and we continue to be at full-speed making sure everything is ready to go. The membership numbers continue to rise, but have plateaued over the past couple of weeks. As of now we are up to 840 members which puts us 10 below our goal for April 25th. We hope to reach 900 by the end of next week and I am confident we can make that happen. Be sure to tell all your friends to get signed up so we can increase participation for the summer.
I spent the first part of this week in Bean Station, Tennessee which is Northeast of Knoxville. Walters State Community College asked if I would officiate the NJCAA Region VII Championship and I was excited about the opportunity. I spent both Saturday and Sunday prepping the golf course by marking the position on the greens for the hole placements and making sure the golf course was properly marked (hazards, ground under repair. o.b., etc.). I was able to play a little golf on Saturday after I finished my work and it was good to get a couple of swings. I did not play too well, but definitely enjoyed getting to play.
When the tournament began Monday morning it took me awhile to get back into the routine of running golf tournaments, I was a little rusty. With only two teams, it gave me some time to get in the routine and by about mid-morning I was good to go. Walters State ended up winning the Championship and will head to Phoenix next month to compete in the NJCAA National Championship. Good luck guys.
I spent the rest of the week finalizing our staff for the summer and trying to get the work schedule completed so everyone will have an idea of which events they will be working this summer. I will continue to iron out all the details and make changes as I see fit.

Tour Talk
The PGA Tour is in Texas this week competing in the EDS Byron Nelson Classic. Currently Adam Scott is atop the leaderboard at 5 under par and many are only a couple of strokes behind. It looks like by the scores that the course is playing hard. The winds have been 15-20 mph the first couple of days and they expect the same throughout the weekend. It will be interesting to see if Adam can come out on top after a couple of near misses earlier in the year.

Until Next Time,

Steve

Season Approaching

Apr. 18th, 2008 | 04:04 pm

We are almost a month out and the season is approaching quickly, I cannot believe it is almost May. With the three tournaments we added last week it was able to open up the Middle Tennessee Area to more members. We are approaching the 800 members mark and expect to pass it this weekend. The numbers are continuing to rise and it is a great sign to us having a successful year for the Tour.

We have been working hard to make sure all of our members are in the proper division this year. Nathaniel has reviewed every application and forwards me the information on those applicants that need to be contacted about the division they signed up for during registration. Out of the 780 current members, around 25% (200-250) have been contacted concerning their division. We are taking this process very seriously and will continue the hard work throughout the season to ensure every member is in the proper division.

All the materials for the member packets have arrived and we expect to start getting those to the membership within the next week.  We are looking at alternatives instead of mailing them out, so be looking for an e-mail with instructions about how to receive your packet.

Tour Talk
Congratulations goes out to Nashville's own Brandt Snedeker for his third place finish in last week's Masters. He was on the leaderboard all week and faced enormous pressure to perform at a high level throughout the tournament.  In the end he fell just short of achieving the ultimate goal, but put in quite an effort.
I know the media has been hard on him about his emotions after the round, but I feel many people would have reacted the same after the craziness of the weekend.  Brandt is on his way to many more high finishes in majors and last weekend was the stepping stone to making all that happen.
This week the Tour is in Hilton Head and it offers a little different perspective that Augusta. Many highly ranked players are in the field and it is looking to be an exciting weekend. Brandt is in field and has made the cut after shooting a pair of 70's. If you get a chance get out the coverage this weekend on CBS. I believe it they will begin coverage on Saturday and Sunday around 3pm EST.

Until next time,

Steve

Tournament Registration A Success

Apr. 8th, 2008 | 04:12 pm

Just one full week into open tournament registration we already have 9 events at its maximum capacity. Due to the popularity we have added three (3) events within the Middle Tennessee region. For their locations please visit the "Tournaments" section on www.tgajuniortour.com. As the demand continues to grow we will try to offer more opportunities as the schedule will permit. Stay tuned as more events may be added daily.

We are starting to receive some of the merchandise for the TMACS (TaylorMade/adidas Championship Series) events this summer and we know our members will not be disappointed. Those that compete in the TMACS events will receive a specific TaylorMade or adidas prize at each event. I will give you a hint, one of the prizes will help you comfortably walk the fairways this summer.

We have posted the yardages and course ratings for the tournaments on our website. If you look under the "Season-Ending Championships" section and click on your appropriate division you will see a link near the bottom of the page for this year's ratings. This will give you a good idea of which tees to play from when practicing for each event. Remember, these rating are preliminary and may change on the tournament day due to factors  unforeseen. For a definite rating please call the office after the event and we will indicate which rating has been used to determine you adjusted scoring average.

Tour Talk
With Masters week upon us it signals the start of golf for the year. I have been glued to the Golf Channel and their nightly coverage of this prestigious event. I have been looking forward to this week for quite awhile now and am anticipating a special weekend down in Augusta.
Our own Brandt Snedeker will be competing this week in Augusta. He will have the fortune of playing with former Masters Champion Tom Watson during the first two rounds. Be sure to root on our Nashvillian.

Until next time,

Steve

Tournament Registration on the horizon

Mar. 28th, 2008 | 05:24 pm

Regular tournament registration is set to open up next Tuesday, April 1st at 8 am CDT. With early registration opening this past Monday many of the tournaments are filling up quick so be sure to get signed on the morning of the 1st to guarantee your spot in the events.

Our numbers continues to grow as we are on the cusp of hitting 600 members. We are very delighted that our numbers are this high early in the registration process and the 2008 season is looking to be the strongest ever. One important number we are looking at this season is the retention rate of those from last season. Of the 581 current members, over 350 were also members in 2007. When you calculate that equation out, that is almost 60% of the membership retained from 2007. Our goal to start the year was 65% so we have a little work to do to make sure we get those members back from 2007. If you have some friends that played last year be sure to mention to them that the tournaments are filling up quick and it would be a good idea to get online and get signed up.

The schedule has been finalized for the 2008 season. We had a couple of courses that we needed to get everything situated with before we posted the information online, but as of this afternoon the schedule is final. If there are courses that you know of that would be willing to host an event please have them contact our office and we will see what we can do to get them on the schedule.

The pre-registration rules clinics were completed last Saturday and turned out to be a very successful venture. We had over 250 total attendees over the past month and they all got first shot at signing up for tournaments.  We will continue to offer more clinics in the coming years to be sure every member has an opportunity for rules education.

Tour Talk
Tiger's streak of 6 straight PGA Tour wins was stopped last week by Geoff Ogilvy. It was good to see that Tiger is still human and can make mistakes on the course. I have a feeling his 5th place finish put a bad taste in his mouth and he will come out charging at The Masters in a couple of weeks.
Our own Brandt Snedeker has an ok showing at the event. He finished near the back of the pack, but his game was consistent throughout the week. I think once he gets in a groove and starts to make some birdies he will make his way back to the top of the leaderboard.

That is all for now. Be sure to get signed up for the Tour, tournaments are filling up quick.

Kind Regards,

Steve

Tennessee Section PGA lost one of it's best

Mar. 18th, 2008 | 10:56 am

Bobby Nichols, a decorated TPGA Professional from Cookeville, lost his battle with cancer last weekend at the age of 66. As the coach of both the Men's and Women's golf teams at Tennessee Tech, Bobby was extremely helpful to our Tour in that he directed many of his players to apply for internships within our organization. It is a true testament to Bobby's character that the individuals he suggested apply have been instrumental in making our Tour so successful over the past couple of years. I know the quality of our Tour could not be maintained without those dedicated Tennessee Tech golfers on our staff. Click here for more information.

We are getting close to early tournament registration on March 24th. Our clinics the past couple of weeks have been relatively full and we are expecting some events to fill up rather quickly. There are still two opportunities for members to get in the early registration period. We will be hosting two clinics this upcoming Saturday; one in Memphis and one in Kingsport (East TN). Click here for more information.

I was able to get out and play a little bit of golf last week during my trip to Knoxville for one of our rules clinics. We hosted the clinic at Holston Hills and I was lucky enough to be able to play 9 holes that afternoon before I had to set up for the clinic. I had heard so many great things about the course that I was extremely excited to get out and test my luck. Well, it turned out I was a little too excited and I double bogeyed the first hole (not a good way to start, those Donald Ross greens are tricky). A made a couple more bogey's and ended up shooting 40 on the front nine. Not bad after the start, but you always wish you can play better. I look forward to when I can play the full 18 and get a better feeling of the history of Holston Hills.

Tour Talk
What do you know, Tiger wins again. The putt he made on the 72nd hole sent chills up my spine, unbelievable how he seems to make the putt when it matters most. I consider myself very privileged to be able to live in the time period when Tiger is showing his dominance. Our hometown hero Brandt had another solid finish in the tournament as well. He finished tied for 14th at 3 under par.  So far in 2008 he has made 6 of 8 cuts and has a scoring average right around 70 strokes. It is good to see him represent Tennessee, and more importantly Nashville, well.

The Tour is at Doral this week for another World Golf Championship. Tiger has dominated these events in the past and I wouldn't be surprised if he continues this week.

Until Next Time,

Steve

Jr. Golf Celebration Weekend Success / Rules Clinic Addition

Mar. 10th, 2008 | 09:43 am

Well despite the weather predictions the Junior Golf Celebration Weekend went on without a hitch. Instead of one big celebration day on Saturday the 8th we decided, after a long discussion, to spread the agenda to two days and offer an opportunity to those that got stuck at home the chance to attend and find out about junior golf for 2008.

After the final tally marks were counted we had over 400 guest during the weekend. Of those 400, we had 160 Junior Tour members who attended one of our rules clinics to get early registration priority. With such a high number of attendees on a snowy weekend it is a good sign for the future that the Tour will be full this summer. Make sure to sign up for the one of our remaining clinics so you will have a chance for early registration on March 24th.

Due to the adjusted schedule from celebration weekend we have decided to a rules clinic at Golf House in Franklin. The clinic will take place on Saturday, March 15th at 10 am and will last until around 11:30 am. As members leave the clinic they will be handed their member kit which includes: a hat, towel, book, magnet, and important papers. We will also be sure to put your name on our list for early registration.

I am continuing to try to get the last four tournaments scheduled for the year. I have hit some road blocks and hope to continue to make strides daily in order to get those finalized. If there is any course you would like to play and have access to the right individuals that would allow our Tour to come out, please let me know and I will be sure to pursue every opportunity possible.

Thanks again to those that attended this weekend at Golf House. We took a step in the right direction to making 2008 a successful year and I hope it continues as we travel the state and promote our program.

Don't be afraid to say hello.

Until next time,

Steve McDonald
Director, TGA Junior Tour

USGA Rules School

Feb. 22nd, 2008 | 03:57 pm

After four longs days at rules school in Atlanta the staff is primed and ready to get the junior golf season underway. The classes in Atlanta gave an extensive overview of every one of the 34 USGA Rules of Golf. The class is structured much like middle school or high school in that the teacher lectures for awhile and then at the end you take a test to see how much information you retained. I did not do as well on the test as I would have hoped, but it is a step in the right direction on where I want to be with my knowledge of the rules. These classes are open to the public and if you are interested in attending you can visit the rules section on www.usga.org and try to get signed up. I believe registration is nearing its end for 2008 so be sure to visit the website soon if you want to get involved.

My instructor this year made the class very interesting. Both gentleman are on the Executive Committee which makes the final decision on items that might need to be changed in the book. It was interesting to hear their stories behind the changes for 2008 and the process it took to get them in the book. I will definitely look for the classes in the future where they are teaching because I feel I learned the most this year.

The Match Play is this week on the PGA Tour. I am sure many of you saw Tiger's comeback against J.B. Holmes. It was one of the most amazing displays of golf I have ever seen. Tiger continues to amaze the public with the skill he has on the course. Will he ever make a mistake when the pressure is on? He hasn't done it many times in his career.  Our own Brandt Snedeker didn't fair too well this week, got knocked out in the first round. We will keep rooting for him to do well.

Well that is all for now. Don't be afraid to say hello.

Kind Regards,

Steve McDonald
Director, TGA Junior Tour

Membership Continues to Grow

Feb. 15th, 2008 | 05:01 pm

Well, we are continuing our trend of rising membership. After just two weeks we are up over 240 members. If you have not signed up yet and want to get your preferred tournament schedule, time is running out on getting the early registration spots for 2008. Also, be sure to check the schedules for the Spring rules clinics. All the sites and times have been finalized and if you forgot to fill in which site you will be attending please call or e-mail the office and we will be sure to update your profile.

Earlier this week we had our annual TGA Staff Retreat. We went up to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg and stayed at a cabin for three days. Much of time was filled with movies and Rock Band (yes, even us older folk put down killer licks on the guitar), but we took time to analyze 2007 and see areas where we could improve as an association for 2008. I was real excited about the ideas that came out of the meeting and be looking for positive changes from the TGA in 2008.

I was able to finalize the TaylorMade/adidas Championship Series schedule for 2008. We were able to get an all girls event at Signal Mountain G & CC in early June and I am hoping it will be a great success. Signal Mountain G & CC has been very gracious to us and be sure to let them know how much they are appreciated. I am also about 95% complete of the one-day schedule with three events in West TN and four events in the Chattanooga area still to be added.

Tour Talk
The PGA Tour is at Riveria this week. Our own Brandt Snedeker is in the field once again and we are hoping for another solid finish from the local hero. After a first round 76 he is going to have to play strong on Friday to make the cut. Speaking of the cut, there has been some controversy over a new rule that limits the cut to the Top 70 and ties up to 78 players. In 2007 there were only two events where more than 78 players made the cut and already in 2008 2 of the first 5 events have been effected by this rule. The players board voted this new rule in to eliminate days on the weekends that were lasting 5 hours due to backups caused by so many players on the course. Tim Finchem, PGA Tour Commissioner, met with the board earlier this week and hopefully a decision will come soon to alleviate the tension that seems to exist between the players and the board.

That's all for know. Many of our staff will be headed to Atlanta next week for USGA Rules School. It will be an interesting sessions with the new rule changes for 2008. I will be sure to update everyone on any big changes.

Kind Regards,

Steve McDonald
Director, TGA Junior Tour

Registration Success

Feb. 8th, 2008 | 06:04 pm

We off to a good start on the membership registration sign-ups. Just one full week in, we are already up to 167 members on our Tour. It looks like we are on pace to have another full membership of over 1,100 for the 2008 season. Be sure to tell all your friends about our Tour so we can have as full a field possible for every tournament.

The schedule is so close to being finalized. I am hoping that by early next week we will have it complete and posted on-line. There are still two TMACS events to be scheduled. One is in the Memphis area and one in the Tri-Cities area. Be sure to keep looking at the schedule because events are being added daily.

The Tennessee Golf Association will be out the office next week until Wednesday. We will be in Gatlinburg at our annual Staff Retreat. We are hoping to have positive discussions on ways we can improve our business. I will update everyone on its success when we return.

Tour Talk
The PGA Tour is at Pebble this week. Brandt Snedeker (Nashville) is coming off a Top-10 last week in Phoenix and I am hoping he has another good week. Through 2 rounds he is 1 over par and needs a good round on Saturday to make the cut. Be looking for him on the coverage tomorrow. I always like the Pro-Celebrity events on Tour. It shows that celebrities are just like us normal golfers, can't hit fairways, can't hit greens, and have too many putts.

Have a good weekend. Don't be afraid to say hello.

Kind Regards,

Steve McDonald
Director, TGA Junior Tour

Membership Registration

Feb. 1st, 2008 | 03:43 pm

The big kick-off to the 2008 season starts Monday, February 4th at 8:00 am CST. At that time, membership registration will be available on our website at www.tgajuniortour.com. If you have any questions about how to sign up or get involved in the Tour feel free to browse around the website or give us a call at 615-790-3336.

Well I have hit a snag with finalizing the TMACS events, but will hopefully get those taken care of by the end of next week. We want to get the best courses possible for these events and are holding off as long as possible in hopes of gaining access to some high quality facilities in the state.

The one-day event schedule is almost finalized.  I am down to about 10 events that are still looking for a date. Stay tuned to the schedule (which will be posted on Februrary 4th) to see where those tournaments end up. We are pleased with the variety of courses for the 2008 season and expect them to be very helpful in making this season great.

An update on the "Tennessee Golf Map". On a blog a few weeks back I mentioned we were in the process of creating a new edition for 2008. Well, we just received a proof from the printing company that we can now take to some sponsors and see if we can't get the map in production within the next few weeks. Our hope is to get every member a map with their Member Packet in the Spring. Stay tuned for details on it progress.

The PGA Tour has moved on to Arizona this week. I am sure many of you witnessed Tiger's incredicle play last week in Phoenix and he has already moved to the top of the leaderboard over in Dubai after two rounds. I have a feeling he may win every event that he enters this year (pretty lofty goal, may not happen).  It is definitely an exciting time to be involved in the golf industry. Nashville's own, Brandt Snedeker has started the FBR Open with a 67 and we will be following his progress throughout the weekend.

Well back to scheduling. Don't be afraid to say hello. Maybe even start your own blog.

Kind Regards,

Steve McDonald

2008 Rules of Golf / Schedule

Jan. 22nd, 2008 | 05:10 pm

With the start of a new year comes changes to the USGA Rules of Golf. Every four years executives from both the USGA and R&A publish changes to the rules of golf.  Well, 2008 is a rules change year and starting January 1st the changes come into effect. Every member who signs up for the 2008 Tour will be given a new rule book to stay up-to-date on the changes. Also, be sure to look at the rules clinics link on the homepage to see the places and times the clinics will be held. Those that sign up as members and attend a rules clinic will be eligible for early tournament
registration in late March.

The summer schedule is about 75% complete. I hope to get a majority of it complete by the end of the week and post it on our homepage by membership registration on February 4th. We are excited about returning to the facilities that have supported us so well over the years as well as new courses that have opened their doors to our events.

Matt Vanderpool, Executive Director, TGA (see my "Friends" section to view his blog) recently returned from the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the show you can view its story on www.pga.com. I have never been myself, but I hear it is quite the place to be. Golf vendors and merchandisers from across the country come to Orlando to showcase their products for the 2008 season.

As many of know Tiger is returning to the Tour this week. I believe he is going for a 5-Peat at the Buick Invitational. As a Tiger fan I will be rooting him on all weekend. It will also the mainland debut of our own Brandt Snedeker. Last year he recorded his first PGA Tour top 10 at this event and we are hoping he will be in contention this week. Be sure to watch and root on the Nashville native. On a side note, I remember playing a high school match against Brandt at McCabe GC in Nashville. On the first hole on the old North nine he teed his ball on a pencil and drove the first green. From there on he and his team went on the beat our team by over 20 strokes. Not a good day in Centennial High Golf.

Well that is all for now. Keep coming back for more information. Let me know any subjects you would like to hear about in golf administration or golf in general

More to Come,

Steve McDonald
Director, TGA Junior Tour

Welcome to Our Blog

Jan. 17th, 2008 | 09:41 am
location: Golf House Tennessee
mood: thankful thankful

Well it's mid-January and the Tour season is upon us. After completion of last year's Tournament of Champions we began the process of developing ideas of improvement for the 2008 season. We began working hard at improving ways to communicate to our members and I hope with the development of an updated website and this blog, we can better serve our members and give them all the information they need on junior golf.

I am in the process of finalizing of the schedule for 2008. I would say I am about 40-45% complete. Many of TaylorMade/adidas Championship Series (TMACS) events are complete and the remaining 4 are close to being finalized. The process gets difficult when many courses have to meet with their tournament committees before they can make any decisions. I hope to finalize the schedule by the beginning of February and get a tentative schedule posted.

I am also in the process of updating the "Tennessee Golf Map".  I know many of you remember the map from year's past and I am hoping to include an updated one in this year's member packet. For those of you that do not know about the map, there is a company called Fore Better Golf, Inc. that makes golf maps for many states in the South. Tennessee is currently on their 6th edition of the map and I am hoping to get the 7th edition in the next month or so. These maps can be handy when trying to locate golf courses in your region.

On a personal note, I am a die-hard PGA Tour fan. This week the Tour is in  La Quinta, California at the Bob Hope Classic. This is one of my favorite events for the fact that it is 5 days of golf and the celebrities are playing with the Tour pro's. I am interested to see how David Duval will do in 2008. Over the past 4 or 5 years he has had some illnesses in his family and had lost his drive for the game. I was listening to an interview he had and he indicated his goal for 2008 was trying to get on this year's Ryder Cup. That will take some determination, I hope he can do it. I would love to see him do the Hulk Hogan, hand to the ear move again like he did back in 1999.

Anyway, I will be posting regularly so be sure to keep checking back and maybe create a blog of your own to let us know how you are doing.

More to come,

Steve McDonald
Director, TGA Junior Tour
